Can we drop the labels?
With the exception of a some extremists, I think we can all agree that we want similar things. Apart from American Indians, many of our ancestors settled in America to take refuge from religious and economic persecution. I’m not just talking about ancestors from the colonial era; I’m talking about people who have, and continue to settle in America, for similar reasons today.
We all want freedom. We all want life, liberty and the chance to pursue happiness. Our history is not without faults but I think deep down we all want the same thing from this place we all call home.
So I ask that you drop your labels for a moment, and take a hard look at yourself and those around you. Ask yourself why you are here. Then, realize that in a democracy, all political power emanates from the people. Our political environment is designed to divide, but we can take it back. Let's not rely on one person or the Federal government but let's unite to make a change.
Stop listening to hateful rhetoric from both sides and everywhere in between. We are better than this.
Have a constructive, thoughtful conversation with people of different backgrounds and perspective. Try to put yourself in another pair of shoes for a moment and, if you must label yourself, label yourself 100% spandex: able to stretch and fit almost anything!
